SURAT: Police arrested a gang of five on Friday before they could loot a jewellery shop here.
Crime branch officials received information that some miscreants were planning to loot Bhimjibhai Jewellers. Police kept a watch in the area and in the evening they stopped five persons on two bikes out of suspicion. Police found them to be possessing weapons following which they were arrested.
Jitendra Lumbhani (37), who was among those arrested, claimed that he was general secretary of Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP). Others who were held were Milan Dhorajia (19), Dharmesh Saija (21), Jayesh Lumbhani (35) and Indrasing Patil (34). Their motor-cycles have also been seized. Police have also seized one revolver, two knives, two airgun, four mobile phones and some cash from the accused.
The total amount of the weapons and vehicles seized has been estimated to be worth Rs 59, 578. Jitendra told the police that he had visited the jeweller’s shop several times before planning the loot.
